Jim and Della were very young and very poor. They had only two things that were dear to them: Jim's gold watch and Della's golden hair.
As Christmas was coming nearer Della began thinking about a present for her husband. She counted her money, but understood that she wouldn't be able to buy anything. Suddenly Della remembered that she had seen an advertisement at the hairdresser's. It was written in it that people could sell their hair.
Della rushed there. The woman in the hairdressing saloon told her they would pay twenty dollars. After the hair were cut off Della got her money. She ran to the nearest shop for a suitable thing and she found it soon enough. It was a chain for Jim's watch.
When she returned home, she felt quite happy. The only thing she was afraid of was that Jim would fall out of love seeing her changed appearance.
When Jim came he noticed the change in Della's hair-do and he looked at her strangely. Della cried hurriedly: "Oh, Jim, don't worry! My hair will grow up very soon. I sold it to buy a wonderful present for you!" And she showed him a chain. But Jim shook his head sadly: "Sorry, Della, I sold my watch to buy a present for you." With these words he gave Della very beautiful combs.
