In Search Of Sunrise.
Первая пластинка из серии In Search Of Sunrise появилась в далеком 1999 году. In Search Of Sunrise 3 Panama. In Search Of Sunrise 5 Los Angeles! А Вы? Вы уже ищете восход солнца?
Tiesto, you either love him or hate him. Opinion on the guy divides and polarises the trance community with legions of fans equalled by numerous people who are, shall we say, less keen on his music and his DJing. However, say what you like about him, it cannot be denied that he is one of the most recognisible faces in dance music and is certainly one of the formost DJs in the electronic music scene. From gigs at the Olympic opening ceremony to the huge 'Tiesto in Concert' nights attracting thousands of devoted fans, he packs out arenas and plays to huge crowds that most other DJs would dream to play to. With this in mind, the newest ISOS compilation is certainly going to be one of the biggest mix albums of the year. The first 3 in this (in)famous series are generally regarded as classic mixes, all being in 1CD format with the cream of trance and progressive featuring on them.
Episode 4 moved to a 2CD album for the first time, and arguably the quality suffered as a result. Here again we have a 2CD mix, 28 tracks with which Tiesto has to prove to us that he is a worthy leader of the trance scene.
CD1: The album's full title is "In Search of Sunrise 5 - Los Angeles" which is reflected in the specially crafted intro track 'Malibu Beach'. This is a pleasant introduction to the CD, but as soon as the first real track is mixed in we see the true style Tiesto is going for here. 'Colour My Eyes' is a vocal track, with a laidback, low BPM and a housey feel to the percussion and the bass. This atmosphere continues with the next 2 tracks, the sublime Late Night Alumni - Empty Streets and the male vocal track 'Beside Me' both ease us into the compilation with a relaxed feel to them. It's just a that the transitions, which are of course one of the biggest parts of a mix CD, have moments where the keys clash pretty severely. This is a bit of a let down, and sadly something which continues to an extent throughout the CD.From this housey start we then get a funky electro feel for a couple of tracks, with a distinctly electro-house track in 'Moonlight Party' followed by 2 tracks by top producer Matthew Dekay, firstly his remix of Leama & Moor - Everything Matters and then his own tune 'Let the Game Begin'. All the while here though, the progressive influence is there and Mr. Verwest keeps the BPM low and the groove high. So far the CD has been pretty nice, but we're still waiting for something to really, really hook us into the mix.Fortunately that hook is provided by track 8, the divine Karen Overton - Your Lovin Arms which is surely one of the biggest vocal trance/progressive tracks of recent years. Achingly simple, with the music simply providing a base for Karen's gorgeous vocals. Watch out here for the huge stabs at the breakdown as well, this is a really great track! The pace picks up a bit from here, with the next couple of tunes perfectly suiting the 'In Search of Sunrise' title, in particular the beautiful Kalafut & Fygle - Novocaine with its guitar and piano fitting the relaxed, beach atmosphere perfectly. As we draw towards the end of this disc, the last few tunes are in that melodic progressive trance style which is extremely popular right now. Tunes from Basic Perspective, Tom Cloud and A.M. drift along nicely with pleasant sounds and a nice groove, and follow on nicely with the general theme of this disc. Finally we have the vocal track 'Little Bird' from Cass, with her distinctive vocal cutting through the production and closing the CD well.
CD2: A second Los Angeles themed intro here from production genius Geert Huinink quickly gives way to the first track, 'Something is Wrong'. This has a pounding kickdrum and quickly shows a harder side to this CD. The 'Sunrise' motif that runs through this album comes back with the summery, melodic prog of 'Zanzibar' by Shah & Laruso however, with the perfect blend of chants, flutes, plinky noises and deep bass to keep the track rolling along nicely. Sadly the mix into Progression - Technophobia is a little on the keyclash side as well, and rather spoils the end of 'Zanzibar'. The next few tracks are similar in their combination of simple melodies and techy influences, with 'Green Astronauts' being a highlight of this CD, and the whooping, whale noises of 'These Days' being an interesting diversion from the melodic progressive we've been hearing for a little while. The CD seems to shift up a gear with the next couple of tunes, with nearly 9 minutes being taken up by Jonas Steur's superb remix of his own 'Tales From the South' pushing the tempo and the energy a bit higher. He appears 1 track later with the appropriately titled 'Second Turn', a track with a very similar feel to 'TFtS'. The pace is certainly picked up with the simple yet effective Aspekt - Hi-Jack with it's bleepy melody and sweet chords working really well. Highlight of CD2 definitely comes 2 tracks later though, with the awesome 'Helsinki Scorchin' pushing the CD towards a powerful climax. Way Out West - Don't Forget Me provides that climax, and takes the pace and the mood back down towards that 'Sunrise' relaxed atmosphere we experienced for the first 1 and a half discs here. It's a nice and relaxing vocal track to end the compilation on.
Conclusion: Inevitably, this CD will be compared to the preceding 4 albums in the series, and with 3 of those already sitting comfortably in the trance hall of fame, Tiesto has a hard job to live up to them. Simply put, this album isn't as good as ISOS 1-3. While it certainly conforms to the 'In Search of Sunrise' title and concept, there are a few points on each CD which stop it from being ranked equally with previous ISOS albums. In areas the mixing is off key and a couple of the tracks in there are very similar in sound and mood to each other. One gets the feeling that by cutting this to a single 15 track CD this could well have been one of the best in the ISOS series, but here, just as with episode 4, it doesn't quite live up to the ISOS hype. When removing this from the context of the first 3 ISOS albums, this is a decent compilation. For all the hype and all the marketing power surrounding Tiesto however, I can't help feeling we expect something better than 'decent'. We expect perfection from someone as widely known and widely regarded in the scene, and he has fallen slightly short of the mark here.
Having said all of this, the CD still has plenty of good points. You can tell that Tiesto has put in a lot of effort with choosing his tracks, and there are a lot of very good tunes on the 2 CDs. This will clearly sell by the truckful, and deservedly so as it is a very good album. It is just a shame that it couldn't have been the great album we all hoped for from one of the biggest trance DJs in the scene.
