Casual Look

There are some basic rules:

1. Avoid big logos like the plague.
2. Avoid any training shoe with springs.
3. Classic Understated is the look. Think Cary Grant not Gary Glitter.
4. Formula 1 drivers get paid for those logos on everything, you don’t so don’t go for a 100% logo look.
5. Sportswear is for the Gym or for hanging round outside off licences drinking cheap cider.
6. Jewellery is bad, VERY VERY bad, Wedding ring and a good quality watch only.
7. Hooded tops are a layer garment, wear them under a jacket. (Unless you are a mugger)
8. Tracksuit bottoms tucked into socks is NOT stylish it’s stupid.
9. Shower every day and change them pants too! you already change socks every day don’t you? You do right?
10. There is a fine line between a nice hooded technical coat and an anorak, remember that a VERY VERY FINE LINE.




Jackets

The stylish casual jacket will cost you more than a few bob but will last you for years. Buy the best you can. Goretex XCR is very good but even better, is Ventile particularly double layer Ventile. At the moment the Scandinavian’s are making some wonderful jackets at fairly reasonable prices. Fjall Raven jackets are well made,extremely good value, stylish and reasonably exclusive. Recommended models are the Nordli, Telemark II and Greenland.
Try and avoid any coat with padding unless you want the Michelin Man look. A good coat should just be a waterproof and windproof layer. Wear layers of wool or cashmere when you need warmth.




Knitwear

Buy 100% wool or cashmere. V Necks look good with a plain white t-shirt underneath. A Crew neck can also look good. Remember no patterns and all logos should be small, very small. Navy or stone/light khaki are good colours although some pastel colours can work.

Tops

Buy something classic and preferably Italian, Uberbrand CP Company make some outstanding tops very stylish and understated. The Italian label at M&S also make some nice stuff.

Jeans

Simple, buy Armani jeans, these are amongst the best jeans available, nicely styled extremely well made and a bargain. They will easily last you 3-4 years of heavy use. If you don’t fancy Armani, try M&S and their superlative Blue Harbour jeans, as they are also very good. Generally speaking with most designer jeans you’re simply paying for the name. So they aren’t really worth the cash and under No circumstances should you buy anything that’s stonewashed or has any “dirty” or other kind of wash. Stick to Indigo and you will be fine.

Shirts

Lacoste make some stunning shirts, with button down collars as do Ralph Lauren. Armani has gone very “Parrot Head” lately so avoid. Paul Smiths ones come up very small but if you can find one that fits and you like.

Combat/Utility Trousers

These really are ubiquitous these days, almost everyone wears them. Most of the designer labels have them and at some absolutely extortionate prices too.
The best place to buy them is would you believe? Debenhams, the big stores have items by Nigel Cabourn. NC designs some very very exclusive pieces for his own label, (J12-J1400 for a coat), the NC Utility range is almost the same but mass produced and is top quality too boot. Expect to pay about J40-50 for a pair of combat trousers. But if you can get in there for a sale (or online sale at www.debenhams.com you can find them for about J18).

Polo Shirts

The polo shirt is a true classic item. The best ones are Lacoste, (avoid the fakes ) and Ralph Lauren. Other good ones are by Italian Yachtwear company Paul & Shark. The English brands can come up trumps and there are some very nice pieces by Barbour and DAKS. Also Henry Cottons should not be discounted.
No matter who makes the shirt avoid big labels or numbers or rips or lary pinks.

Shoes

Mephisto shoes are worth tracking down. These handmade shoes use the best quality material and it shows. Expect to pay for the privilege though. adidas Touring are a nice casual shoe. One True Saxon do some very nice casual shoes, so check out www.goodnorth.com and they often have really cheap sales.
Another good brand with some wicked casual shoes is Clarke’s Wallabies.
Alternatively Lacoste has some pretty good shoes in it’s range. Prada, Armani & Paul Smith also make some damn good casual shoes but these are very expensive and not really worth splashing the cash on. If you do decide to buy some, go down a size as they come up one size too large.

Trainers

Let me say this just once, your trainers need to be German, either Puma or preferably adidas. Go for classic retro style trainers, (look for the Trefoil logo).
One of the best trainers and one that is easy to track down at the moment is the classic adidas Gazelle trainer in blue suede. Loved by everyone from Mods, Northern Soulboys and casuals, this trainer looks the business and gives you credibility. You could also look for the ever stylish Stan Smith, though these have become a little too obvious. Another relatively easy trainer to buy is the Spezial, similar to the Gazelle these are a superb trainer.
Under NO circumstances should you wear any modern looking trainers as you will just look silly.
