Review by Richard Dyer.

The thing with listening to an entire trance album by the same artist, is that it all starts to sound the same. Which is why I have tried to make a point of listening to it in several parts before sitting down to pen this review.
However you listen to it, it's a cd full of trance. Some of it stands out and some of it blends into the next track without really grabbing your attention. I couldn't for the life of me, tell you which track i'm on at the moment, probably because it's a promo and the CDDB database hasn't being updated yet and I've lost the bit of paper that went with the CD, so short of ejecting of it to see what Track 9 actually is, we might have a struggle on our hands.
So to the music. Cosmic Gate are Claus Terhoeven & Stefan Bossems, AKA Nic Chagall and DJ Bossi, which apparently having toured the world, remixed the hottest artists and shaped their own distinctive place in the trance scene, they have polished off what is surely one of the biggest trance albums of 2006.
I've recently regained an interest in trance, and if this is set to be the biggest album of 2006 then I'm going to lose that interest pretty quickly. A mile in my shoes (track one) is a guy talking over a loop with some wind noises that remind me of a water ride at Alton Towers. Track Two (I feel wonderful) used to be good and used to be called 'Skydive' which to many was an anthem and to many including me has just lost its bottle. 'Element of Life' lifts my mood a little bit but not enough to stop me skipping to the next track 'Should've Known' which is the current single and recently did the rounds at Goodgreef. It's cheesy, but then it's trance and thats what i've come to expect.
7 mins and 20 seconds of Tiff Lacey whinging about what she should have done is far to long, so I skip to the next track which FINALLY has something good about it, 'Analog Feel' is exactly what it says on the tin and is blatantly designed to destroy dance floors up and down the country. This might be the one reason that the cd makes it past 'coaster' level in Skiddle HQ because so far thats looking likely.
Maybe, just maybe I've grown up a little bit to much to be listening to trance at my computer desk, it is after all a genre of music that belongs in big nightclubs with big speakers and big lights and lots of muppets who found a use for pipe cleaners. Actually, I take that last bit back, I had a wicked 3 hours of trance at our recent Wickerman Festival, and put it this way, none of it sounded like this. Nor was there a pipe cleaner in site.

Cosmic Gate - Earth Mover is released on Monday 4th September.
