Таким программам как VMWare и Virtual PC похоже, придется потесниться, так как у них появился новый конкурент — Virtual Box. Хотя конкурировать в данном сегменте рынка, с уже устоявшимися и хорошо себя зарекомендовавшими лидерами довольно сложно, у Virtual Box это получается превосходно. Она практически не уступает аналогам и при этом имеет весьма серьезный козырь: исходный код программы открыт, что гарантирует ее чистоту и бесплатный статус.
Возможности:
Программа Virtual Box позволяет эмулировать x86-совместимый ПК, на который можно установить большое число гостевых ОС, среди которых все семейство Windows, начиная с Windows 3.x и заканчивая Vista, DOS, Linux на основе ядра версий 2.4 и 2.6 и OpenBSD. Сама же виртуальная машина может предоставлять системе доступ в сеть, позволять работать с периферийными устройствами. Помимо прочего стоит отметить достаточно удобные инструменты для обмена файлами.

С удовольствием использую данную программу под Ubuntu для запуска Windows XP - работает отлично. Режим интеграции рабочего стола впечатляет.

DALDON, ну как минимум - у меня нет принтера  а вообще VirtualBox умеет перебрасывать usb-устройства с хост-машины в гостевую (VirtualBox OpenSuse Edition - не умеет), у меня так вебкамера работает.

Sun планирует интегрировать Virtual Box в собственную платформу для виртуализации под названием xVM (сокращенно от x86 Virtual Machine), основанную на гипервизоре Xen с открытым исходным кодом. Гипервизор обеспечивает возможность одновременной работы на одном физическом сервере нескольких операционных систем. При этом каждую из виртуальных машин можно перезагружать, отключать и вновь запускать независимо от других. Помимо гипервизора, в состав xVM Server входят "облегченная" версия операционной системы Solaris, файловая система ZFS и средства предиктивного самовосстановления. Средства виртуализации Sun xVM Server предназначены для использования на компьютерах, построенных с применением процессоров с архитектурой х86. Помимо Solaris, платформа xVM Server поддерживает операционные системы Microsoft Windows и Linux.
Между тем, по оценкам экспертов аналитической компании Gartner, к 2009 году в мире будет нассчитываться около четырех миллионов виртуальных машин. При этом большую часть составят именно десктопы, а вовсе не серверные системы, сообщает eWeek.
